What is a
Tenet? A Tenet is a
belief or a value held by a person or a group. All students are
expected to learn the 5 Tenets at an early stage in their Taekwondo Training.
These Tenets form a framework around
which they can develop their character as well as their technical abilities.
As far as
possible these ideals should be kept in mind and followed in your daily life,
but should most definitely be followed whilst training in the Dojang. The 5
Tenets of Taekwondo are:
Many students
who start Tae Kwon Do will fail to reach its higher grades due to a lack of one
or more of these tenets, or a failure to develop them.
Don't be one of them!
Courtesy,
Polite, considerate
and respectful behavior. The observance of unwritten rules.
Integrity,
Not vain,
boastful or egotistical, but shy, decent and humble, being unassuming and
unpretentious.
Perseverance,
To continue
to try to achieve something even though difficulties arise.
Self-Control,
Keeping ones
self in check, not allowing anger to override ones normal behavior.
Indomitable Spirit.
Courage and
boldness that can not be overcome, the will to succeed despite problems.
Belt colours and meanings
White
belt signifies Innocence,
Yellow
belt represents the Earth
Green
belt represents the Growing shoot
Blue
belt represents the Sky
Red
Belt represents Danger
Black
belt represents Maturity
The
Oath Of Taekwondo
I
shall observe the Tenets of Taekwondo
I
shall respect the instructors and seniors
I
shall never misuse Taekwondo
I
shall be a Champion of freedom and justice
I
shall build a more peaceful world
The Dojang Rules
When
entering or leaving the Dojang bow towards the Instructor of flags
Proper
respect shall be shown to and by senior ranks
No
FOOLING AROUND. Or loud talking in the Dojang
Uniform
shall be clean and pressed for all lessons
Never
be late for class without prior arrangement
Finger
and toe nails shall be kept short
There
shall be NO swearing in class
Tempers
will not be tolerated – especially during sparring
Wearing
of jewelry is not permitted
Do
not fold your arms in class
No
smoking, eating, or chewing in the hall
Do
not leave the class without permission
Do
not face instructor or flags when straightening your uniform
Your
instructor shall be referred to as Sabumnim
or Sir
When
seated legs should be crossed
No
talking when the instructor is talking
Students
and instructors should act in a courteous manner at all times
At
the end of the class bow to your instructor and the next senior grade
When
working with a new partner bow before commencement
Lazy
, sloppy and
poor attitudes have no place in Taekwondo
The
tenets of Taekwondo must be adhered to at all times.
The B.T.C.B. has
asked all member clubs to observe the above rules.
